Passion that doesn't annoy

In a recent blog, I included a link to a young woman speaking on the topic of abortion. She's against it because, as a fetus, she survived a botched abortion.

I included the link as an illustration of being able to speak passionately about a subject (even this controversial topic), without having a personal edge to her voice. Given her role in the event, it wouldn't be odd for her to feel and sound personal.

It's always a challenge to remove the personal tone, the "I have an axe-to-grind," flavor when speaking on a subject near and dear to your heart. Especially when you're sure you're right. But the goal (and the solution) is to stay focused on the importance of the idea without letting indignation, self-righteousness, or personal injury or triumph sneak through.

You may not win everyone to your point of view, but you may get them to listen. And that's an important first step.

FIRST PERSON

Kerry Almos, Regional Sales Mgr., Rich Products Corporation:

“I did get to use what I learned in class right away.

Right after class I had a presentation with one of my broker groups to review their sales and plans. I had a much easier time prepping for it and delivery went well -- still started out nervous, should have taken a few more breaths! Next time!! I really do appreciate having had the opportunity to go through this class, your instruction I will never forget and know will use often!”

Why don't they listen to me?

“Often when I present an idea no one pays attention. Yet, when someone else presents the same idea everybody jumps on board. What can I do?”

Listen to what is taking place in the meeting so you don't offer the idea at an inappropriate time.

Take time before presenting an idea to value the likely benefits. Then, hold your mental ground as you present it.

Put aside your ego and focus on the commitment you feel to the idea's benefits. Don't tie yourself to it and allow yourself to feel that their response to the idea is a vote on you.

Own your space whether you're sitting or standing. Maintain eye contact as you're paying attention to the idea and your audience. Speak with conviction. That is, make statements rather than asking questions (unless you are actually asking a question).

How you say it does make a difference. Give this a try and let me know how it goes.
