In this issue:
On my blog, someone suggested this website for quotations: http://shortquotes4u.blogspot.com/ There's a lot of crossover between presentations (in person) and conference calls. For instance, in both cases it's good to be clear on the outcome you're looking for and clear on the major points that need to be covered. In addition, plan on closing with something that clarifies why the presentation or the call took place and specific outcomes you want. Interestingly, while focusing in front of a group seems challenging because of self-consciousness issues, focusing when no one can see you can be equally challenging. It's easy to split your focus because “you're just on the phone.” But, if you want to maintain control of the direction and outcome of the call, you can't be doing anything else. Focus on what you're saying (be in the moment) and focus on listening to others. Don't let yourself be distracted if you want to be good at this. It's also helpful to stand while you're on the call. It helps your focus and it supports your voice. And, while I don't encourage pacing in a presentation, in a conference call you can pace to your heart's content. Sharon Talkington, Manager, Customer Relations,
Performant Financial Corporation: “I have to say I was very pleased with the class and truly learned some skills that I can immediately apply to future presentations. “After the first day I was thinking it may not give me what I needed but after day two I was sold; I could easily identify tools I learned to help me pace my presentations better and deliver more professional content. “This isn’t a class you can take in a day and get the well rounded results I did from it. But after 3 days I felt I acquired some solid skills that I can work to grow on my own. “I could clearly see on my DVD that my last presentation was far and above better than my first so I was very pleased with the results. “Thank you so much for your time and expertise. It was one of the best classes I have ever taken.” “How can I make my presentation relevant when I'm not able to hear previous presenters?” It's always best if you can be there to hear previous speakers, but when you can't it will help if you do an on-the-spot survey of your audience. You've all ready learned everything you can about your audience and their needs before you put your talk together. So, now it's a matter if asking them a few questions to find out what's been covered. You could tell them the points you're planning to make and then get a show of hands or a verbal response as to which of those have been covered, or which of those they’re most interested in. Or, you could ask questions based on your material to see if they have the answers. You're not testing them, you're respecting their time. A little time spent catching up with what they've heard will give you a much stronger presentation. “Behave toward everyone as if receiving a great guest.” – Confucius “Good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others.” – Plato “A man who smiles at you ALL THE TIME is probably selling something that doesn't work.” – George Carlin “A prudent question is one-half of wisdom.” – Francis Bacon Thousands of people have to give presentations every day, and
