day workshop. Don't put it off. WHEN: May 4, 5, 6, 2011 (See details below.) Have you missed issues of the newsletter? They're archived on our website, along with articles and tips to make you a better speaker. Go to www.GettingOverYourself.com.
In this issue:
You've heard that before. The tough part is putting it into practice. It all goes back to getting over yourself. Your goal is to help the audience and you can do that more easily when you're being yourself. When you're easy, your natural gestures and manner of speaking take over and the audience can relax and listen. You have their trust. (Here's the link to a recent blog I wrote on that subject: http://gettingoveryourself.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/b uilding-trust-counts-on-the-bottom-line/) If you have a sense of humor, something funny may occur to you. If it's appropriate and you won't distract yourself with it (that is, you can get right back on track), you look more human and likeable. For best results, get out of the way and be yourself. Brian Sepanik, Director of Finance and Accounting, San Francisco Marriott Marquis “I'm applying the concepts from class and I feel my executive presence is enhanced. “I've been focusing on answering questions without my voice sounding like I'm asking a question and also on staying in the moment, which helps slow me down. “I had a conference call with my owner last week that I feel went better than usual. On another call, I considered my response instead of answering before I knew my answer. Big difference. “I've also become very comfortable with 'I'd be glad to' when asked to do something. “Thanks for all your help.” “I hate being the last speaker at a conference and having to cut mine short because others have run over. Now that I'm going to be the moderator, how do I keep the meeting on time?” Good for you. Proactive is good. And when the speaker runs over, everyone is annoyed. First: The big cheese needs to tell speakers ahead of time that the time limits aren't just suggestions. Speakers need to plan to speak 10% less than their time and they need to practice with any props or visual aids to verify the actual time. They need to decide what they can leave out if they're running long.
And they need to respect other people's time. Second: You tell them what signals you'll give them to help them stay on time. For instance, “When you have one minute left, I'll stand up. When you have 30 seconds left, I'll come up on the platform. And, when your time is up, I'll be standing right next to you and thanking you.” That may not be your style, but you need to have a plan and make sure they know you mean it. “Your imagination is your preview of life's coming attractions.” - Albert Einstein “We only do what we think we can do. We can be only what we think we can be. We can have only what we think we can have. What we do, what we are, what we have, all depend on what we think” - Robert Collier “We do not keep the outward form of order where there is deep disorder in the mind.” - Wm. Shakespeare “We are always equal to what we undertake with resolution.” - Thomas Jefferson Thousands of people have to give presentations every day, and
