REFUSE TO BE NERVOUS

I just read yet another article that says EVERYBODY is nervous so donít worry about it. And it goes on to make the same old points about it giving energy and life to your presentation.

I donít disagree that that can be the case. But, if you can get the same result without being nervous, why wouldnít you want to do that? When youíre nervous, youíre pretty much thinking about yourself in one way or another. On the other hand, when you think about sharing your subject with your audience thinking about how it can help them, youíre not thinking about yourself. And there goes the nervousness.

The energy and life come from your caring about your subject and your audience. No need to be nervous.

DEAR TEACH

Ron Sundergill, Director Pacific Regional Office, National Parks Conservation Association:

“Taking your 3-day class gave a tremendous boost to my ability to make presentations. It was perfect for anyone who has a fear of speaking before groups. And even for those who donít. I remember feeling some apprehension about the class, but that quickly melted away an hour or two into the course. Iíve recommended your class to many others. It was well worth the time and money invested.

WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU FEEL NERVOUS?

Going back to the editorial above, you have to stop thinking of yourself. But I guess youíre asking what if it just suddenly happens.

No matter when it happens, treat it the same way. Stop and refocus. In my book, Getting Over Yourself: A Guide to Painless Public Speaking and More, thereís a picture of a man with a choke chain around his neck. Youíve got to yank the choke chain and stop the random thoughts that are irrelevant to your making your point.

A brief pause combined with making yourself come back to the party does the trick. No one will notice the pause if you donít implode.

Pauses give the audience time to thinkĖand they wonít be thinking about you, unless you give in or give up.
